Discover what you can do to make the sea plastic free, learn about dozens of different kinds of eggs and experience the feeding of a variety of ocean animals during April’s Family Programs at the Museum of Coastal Carolina.
Here’s a complete breakdown of what’s on the schedule at the Museum during the month of April:
Tuesday at 11 a.m. – Sea Tales: Listen to stories starring animals or exhibits displayed at the Museum and complete interactive crafts or science activities based on each story:
April 1 – An Egg is Quiet by Dianna Aston – With an introduction to over 60 different kinds of eggs (from huge ostrich eggs to the fossilized eggs of dinosaurs), discover the many colors, textures, shapes and sizes an egg can have while exploring fun facts about the eggs and their owners along the way. After we read this story, visitors can design their own egg.
April 8 – Whose Egg is That? by Darrin Lunde – This is a nonfiction guessing game that explores the connections between an animal, its eggs, and its habitat. Learn all about different animals’ eggs and their habitats and make a bird nest craft.
April 15 – Tagalong Turtle by Donna Ferguson – Tagalong Turtle has one goal…to reach the ocean. Will the seagull or the ghost crab see Tagalong Turtle before she reaches the ocean? Find out as we read Tagalong Turtle’s story and make a fun turtle craft.
April 22 – The Swamp Where the Gator Hides by Marianne Berkes – Under the algae that carpets the swamp, near the duck who paddles in ooze, close to the turtle who takes a snooze . . . hides a gator! Still as a log, only his watchful eyes can be seen. But when gator moves, he really moves! What happens to the duck, the turtle, the egret, the deer, and the many other critters of the swamp when gator makes his move? Search for the gator and get a glimpse of real life in a swamp as we read this tale and make an alligator craft.
April 29 – Little Owl’s Night by Divya Srinivasan – It’s evening in the forest and Little Owl wakes up from his day-long sleep to watch his friends enjoying the night. Hedgehog sniffs for mushrooms, Skunk nibbles at berries, Frog croaks, and Cricket sings. A full moon rises and Little Owl can’t understand why anyone would want to miss it. Could the daytime be nearly as wonderful? Mama Owl begins to describe it to him, but as the sun comes up, Little Owl falls fast asleep. Hear about Little Owl’s adventures and make your own Little Owl to take home.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11 a.m. – Touch Tank Feeding: With staff and trained volunteer assistance, gently touch the sea creatures living in the Museum’s Touch Tank and watch trained volunteers feed the animals.
Thursday at 11 a.m. – Ocean Commotion.
Every Thursday, learn about animals that live in the sea and how they are affected by marine debris through a series of activities.
Investigate our enviroscape to learn how marine debris travels from land to sea, dig through a pretend ocean and see if you can determine trash from food, and learn ways to keep the sea plastic free by sorting recycling.
