Avast, ye landlubbers! Batten down the hatches for the Museum of Coastal Carolina and Town of Ocean Isle Beach annual Pirate Week on July 5 – 10.
There will be pirate fun aplenty for those who like pillage, plunder, and sword fights. Who doesn’t, aye?!
Did you know that the proximity of the gulf stream combined with shallow waters and sandbars made the coast of North Carolina an ideal location for piracy? It did, and that’s why we celebrate Pirate Week each year.
Throughout Pirate Week, the Museum of Coastal Carolina and the Town of Ocean Isle Beach Recreation Department offer a variety of fun events to explore this infamous chapter of Carolina maritime history:

Pirate Week Kickoff! – Sword Circle
Demos: 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Sword Circle Swordsmanship Class– 1 to 2 p.m.
This is an introductory class for ages 13 through adult from Garner North Carolina’s Sword Circle that teaches all the basics of historical swordsmanship. Lead Instructor with 19 years of Medieval Combat experience, Alex Foster, will provide an experience to learn about historic combat. Clicking the link below will take you to an external website.

Pirate Ghost Walk – 7 p.m.
Join us for a not-so-scary-stroll through Ocean Isle Beach to hear stories of pirates from long-time OIB residents and story-tellers Allison and Wil Smith. Hear the stories, the history, the legends and myths of pirates from the region including Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. Advance registration required. This event typically sells out.

Sandbar Lecture Series– 5:30 p.m.
“Pirates of the Cape Fear” with Author and Historian Jack E. Fryar, Jr. In this program, author and historian Jack E. Fryar, Jr. will explore the role North Carolina played in the Golden Age of Piracy, recounting the exploits of notorious high seas outlaws like Stede Bonnet, Calico Jack Rackham, female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, and of course, Blackbeard.

Join the Museum of Coastal Carolina and the Town of Ocean Isle Beach for two family-friendly and free pirate week events at Town Center Park.

Crafts Before Pirate Movie in the Park – 7 p.m.

The Museum of Coastal Carolina is located at 21 East Second Street in Ocean Isle Beach, NC.
Admission is free for members. Non-member all-day admission effective March 31, 2022 is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors (62+), $8 for children (3-12), and free for age 2 and under.
