A new HBO movie starring Hilary Swank and Brenda Blethyn chronicling the lives of two women on a mission to wipe out malaria has started filming in the Cape Fear area.
“Mary and Martha” will be filming in Southport, Wilmington and parts of Coastal Brunswick County. They will be filming on the UNCW Campus and in several churches throughout the area. The film also plans of filming numerous scenes in Africa, once they are done filming locally.
“Mary and Martha” is written by Richard Curtis, creator of both “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Notting Hill.” The film is being directed by Phillip Noyce, the director of the popular ABC series “Revenge” that filmed some scenes in Southport and Oak Island in 2011.
This is one of several films and television shows being brought to the area for filming due to a North Carolina tax credit that is helping to promote the ‘Hollywood of the East.’
