Did you know that Mars has 23 months in its year? Ingram Planetarium has NASA’s self-guided, independent make-and-take activities in the Paul Dennis Science Hall to mark the Year of the Solar System: New Worlds, New Discoveries. “These events will unfold over the next 23 months, the
length of a year on the Red Planet” explains NASA columnist Dr. James Green. “History will remember the period Oct. 2010 through Aug. 2012 as a golden age of planetary exploration.” Here’s a list of the upcoming activity topics: January: A Family Affair, Our Solar System’s Family Tree.;
February: Small Bodies, Big Impact; March: Ancient Astronomers:
Modern Tools; April: Water, Water Everywhere; and May: Volcanism, Planets Under Pressure. Be sure to plan to attend Pi Day activities in the Science Hall on Saturday, March 12 from 1-4 p.m. The science hall is open during regular Planetarium Hours.
The Sky Theater Shows on Fridays and Saturdays through May 28 begin at 1
p.m. with NEW! Two Pieces of Glass for all ages; 2 p.m., Astronaut for all
ages; 3 p.m., Seven Wonders for all ages; and 4 p.m., Interstellar Boundary
Explorer for ages 9 and up. A live star show follows and complements each
program.
Winter & Spring Laser Music Shows are on the third Friday & Saturday of each
month. On January 14 & 15, it’s Laser Beatles at 5 and Laser Zeppelin at 6.
On February 18 & 19, Laser Vinyl rocks at 5 and Laser Pink Floyd: Dark Side
of the Moon at 6 p.m. On March 18 & 19, check out Laser Beatles at 5 and
Laser Pink Floyd: The Wall at 6. The Wall is not appropriate for young
children. On April 15 & 16, at 5 it’s Laser U2 and at 6 p.m., Laser
Metallica plays and is not appropriate for young children. On May 20 & 21,
Laser Magic runs at 5 and Laser Beatles at 6. On May 27 & 28 at 5 p.m.,
enjoy the patriotic music and classics of Laser Spirit.
Ingram Planetarium is located at 7625 High Market Street in Sunset Beach.
The Planetarium has digital sky theater shows about astronomy, science,
space exploration, and laser rock & roll music shows. The SciDome HD
Digital Sky Theater simulates a perfectly dark, starry night and it is
unsafe to move around during the shows. Programs are subject to change
without notice. Late arrivals are not admitted to the theater.
Winter and spring hours are Fridays and Saturdays only from 12:30-4 p.m.
through May 28. Admission per show is $8 Adult and $6 for Senior Adults and
children. Memberships are available. Ingram Planetarium is a great place
to volunteer! Groups should call for advance reservations and instructions.
