Town officials have agreed to take the next step, but not yet commit, to creating a roundabout to replace the intersection at N.C. 179 and Causeway Drive. The town board has received input from business owners at the intersection and residents at each step since the roundabout was proposed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation in August.
The roundabout located on First Street has done a good job of handling traffic and reducing accidents. However, the imposed roundabout would have a more options and receives more traffic, especially from large vehicles that would have difficulty navigating it.
NCDOT engineers state that unless a change is made at the intersection, it will fail within 10 years because of increased use as a result of growth in the surrounding area.
