Sea Meets Sky in Special Events and Activities.
The Museum of Coastal Carolina and Ingram Planetarium will celebrate 34 and 24 years respectively with a look back at decades of providing fun science education to southeastern North Carolina.
A Celebration of Sea & Sky, May 18 through 24, includes a week of events, activities and exhibits at both locations with a focus on years gone by. Even though the Museum and Planetarium are located four miles apart, they were both founded by Stuart and Louis Ingram. The Museum opened to the public on May 25,1991 and Planetarium opened the same week in May 10 years later.
While the focus of the two facilities is different, they share a mission to provide educational experiences that are fun and interactive. So here’s a look at what guests who visit that week can expect:
At the Museum
- Each day at 1 p.m. visit the Museum’s creation station to make some favorite take-home crafts from the past. Monday — Clay Turtles; Tuesday– Gyotaku Fish Prints, Wednesday — Sea Globes; Thursday — Shell Necklaces; Friday — Egg Carton Oysters
- Monday, Wednesday and Friday — Live touch tank feedings, one of the Museum’s longest-running and most popular programs.
- Monday at 11:30 a.m.– Turtle Talk with Deb Allen, head of the Ocean Isle Beach Sea Turtle Protection Organization.
- Tuesday at 11 a.m. — Listen to a story and make a craft during the popular Sea Tales program.
- Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. — Sandbar Lecture with Ocean Isle Beach Documentary producer Andrew Spaugh from OIB Kahuna.
- Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. — A Behind-the-Scenes Story of Our Exhibits
- On Thursday at 11 a.m. — Ocean Commotion program.
- On Friday 11:30 a.m. — Megabites, a guided search for shark teeth, a Museum of Coastal Carolina Classic!
- On Saturday 10 a.m. to noon – New Hanover County’s Recycling and Solid Waste Department’s Recycling and Composting Workshop.
At the Planetarium
- Daily from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. a special demonstration or craft in our Science Hall. Monday – Chromatography; Tuesday — Straw Rockets; Wednesday — Pocket Solar Systems; Thursday — Dot and Dash Robots; Friday — Comet on a Stick.
- Wednesday at 4 p.m. — Sunset Beach Turtle Patrol Talk.
- Friday at 4 p.m. – Old Bridge and Sunset Beach History Talk.
- Saturday at 4 p.m. — Solar System Walk.
The Museum of Coastal Carolina is located at 21 East Second Street in Ocean Isle Beach, NC.
Admission is free for members. Non-member all-day admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors (62+), $8 for children (3-12), and free for age 2 and under.
