For 28 years the Delgado family has coordinated their summer vacations so that they could all be at The Winds Resort Beach Club simultaneously. Over the years the Delgado family has grown – and they have yet another one on the way.
The arrival of the Delgado family means so much to the other guests and staff at The Winds because not only are they such an awesome family but also because they provide some entertainment too!
This all started when Bill Delgado, a printing and graphics teacher from Twinsburg OH, his wife Cookie and his family began building a large sand sculpture on the beach. Bill (as always) encouraged other children on the beach to join in. In the midst of the project the children of other families were invited to join in and the rest is history. The sand sculpture that year was to be the first of somewhere over 100 sand castles to be built by the Delgados and children of other guests.
This year the Delgados returned to The Winds for another go at it last week. One day last week Bill Delgado created a true “Sand” Shark complete with a ball cap.
In the past they have created such fantastic sand creations as a Mermaid and Anchor, a “Charlie The Tuna” sculpture complete with a cigar, a giant sea turtle, a huge, an extremely hip Alligator with shades, a headset and backwards baseball cap as well as a beautiful rendition of The Winds Logo.
The end of anyone’s vacation at The Winds is always hard to face but the Delgados have always made it fun with an end of the week party. This tradition begins with the construction of a fairy tale sandcastle in the afternoon, followed by a cookout. The grand finale that night is the sandcastle festooned with dozens of sparklers lighting the evening beach. Kids of all ages (from 2 to 92) are encouraged join in the fun.
This June’s extravaganza was be no exception as they created many more fantastic sand sculpture and castles. We don’t know how they can keep topping their past creations but somehow they always exceed expectations!
George (bartender at The Thirsti Tiki Bar) honored the Delgados at last week’s Friki Tiki Pool Party introducing them and giving them Winds T Shirts and koozies.
We look forward to meeting him or her next year! This video was taken on July 15th, 2009 and shows the “gator” we found on the beach right in front of The Winds Resort Beach Club!
The Delgado family has returned and they have been busy sculpting the sands of Ocean Isle Beach. Yesterday it was “Wally Gator” and a giant Sand Crab! Who knows what they’re up to today.
This is the 25th year that they have been coming to The Winds to spend their families’ summer vacations. This time there are 17 of them including their grandchild J.R. and their nephew Jacob who came all the way from San Diego, CA. Jacob is on leave from the Marine Corps and he’s enjoying a little R&R at The Winds!
This all started back in 1984 when Bill Delgado, a printing and graphics teacher from Twinsburg, Ohio, and his family began building a large sand sculpture on the beach.
Look for them on the beach and if you want to – grab a shovel and join in! Or just grab a shovel and act busy like the girls in the video.
One day last year Bill Delgado created Snoopy, a Sea Turtle and a Fish with sunglasses and a ball cap with help from Mary, Katherine, Hunter and others that joined in. Every day they created something different.
