Save The Ocean Isle Goats!

May 28, 2011 by

Update: Responding to the deluge of calls and emails in support of the herd, The state has responded to the deluge of calls and emails and all of you who are signing our petition and decided to hold off on its plan to have the goats rounded up and taken off the spoil islands near Ocean Isle Beach.

Gordon Myers, executive director of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission says he thinks the most prudent thing would be to postpone any action as there is so much interest in this. “There’s no reason to be hasty.”

Instead state officials are going to hold a public meeting in the area to get more feedback and lay out their case more clearly as to why they think why the goats need to go. It has yet to be scheduled.

Please keep your friends signing the petition (below) as the fate of the island goats has not been decided yet!

The state of NC is going to round up all the goats on three islands near Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach, NC and sell them off.

For as long as anyone can remember, a herd of goats have called these uninhabited islands near Ocean Isle Beach, NC & Sunset Beach, NC home. During the day, they flop down in the sand underneath trees to rest in the shade.

According to one long term area resident these goats have been there since before Hurricane Hazel in the mid 1950s! Ocean Isle Beach Mayor Debbie Smith said she’s seen goats on those islands for more than 25 years.

Since the islands were created when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged the Intracoastal Waterway, the N.C. Department of Administration determined the islands were state-owned land and put up signs calling for the goats’ removal.

SIGN THIS PETITION & HELP STOP THE MADNESS! SAVE THESE POOR DEFENSELESS GOATS FROM BECOMING SOMEONE’S DINNER!

OIB Moving Forward

May 19, 2011 by

Last year an Ocean Isle landmark went out of business, turned off the lights and locked their doors.

Stopping at the IGA Supermarket on the way over to the island had been a summer vacation ritual for many vacationers and a year round habit for locals.

Recently workers appeared and began to remodel the inside and outsdie of the building.

Rumors were rampant as to what might be going in in the old IGA building.

It became obvious that one rumor was true – Eagle Beachwear had purchased the property and was moving in to give competition to the beachwear chain store Waves across the street.

Here are some pictures of the transition that the building has undergone in the last couple of months:

Roads Warriors

May 19, 2011 by

Every main road on Ocean Isle Beach has been resurfaced with a fresh layer of asphalt.

We are excited for our visitors (and for ourselves)! The crew that came in and accomplished the task were amazing.

The did the entire project in the span of two or three weeks!

The began by scraping up the old road bed down a few inches, recycled the materials and resurfaced the roads.

They did one section at a time so the travelers on these roads were minimally inconvenienced.

We all know the experience of watching a road construction project drag on and on.

These guys proved that a resurfacing job can be done quickly, efficiently with minimal inconvenience to the public.

We’re not sure who the company was but we are amazed!

Come see for yourself!

Little Kids Surf Camp
(AGES 6-9)
Little kids surf camp offers a  fun-filled introduction to surfing and ocean safety. With a  focus on teaching the kids to react properly to ocean currents, waves, and how to read the ocean. The student to teacher ratio is 1 to 1 (avid swimmers may be paired 2 students to 1 instructor). All participants are swim tested to determine their current swim level.

Don’t fear, lessons are held in waist deep and shallower water, staying inside the breaking waves and pushing the campers into white water waves. Instructors are very experienced, and stabilize the surfboard while pushing them into waves to allow kids to stand up more easily and not get frustrated!! Special surfboards made of soft foam are used, the same material as a boogie board with a plastic bottom and plastic fins (much safer than typical fiberglass boards).

If ocean conditions are too rough, they will swim, boogie board, and play games on the beach- safety comes first!! They have a certified ocean lifeguard, and two staff members trained in first aid and CPR certified. After camp, your child will be more confident in their ocean skills, and demonstrate knowledge of ocean currents and how to properly react to them in the future.

Little Kids Surf Camp runs from 8:30 am until 11:00am Monday through Thursday. Camp includes surfboard, expert instruction, tent for shade, snacks and drinks, group photo, and an excellent course in ocean safety.
